LEADER

A humble man, which celebrates
his triumph as a warrior.
He praises and celebrates his conscience,
because he doesn’t ignores that the sun is for everyone,
He shines so everyone should shine too.
He listens to others regardless to their positions.
He doesn’t want what others have,
Rectify is correct, it is always time.
Is this man easy to find?
He is like a gold coin that shines by himself and makes shine others.
Who is he?
He is a leader.

I have never written a poem. It was difficult and fun. Thank you all for responding to my blog entries.

Communication

According to Shermerhorn communication is at the heart of the management process (Shermerhorn 254).  An effective communication between members of an organization guarantees success. This blog has been effective as a communication tool for the management class. I agree that it has been effective because one of the major problems about communication is noise. In this blog was easy to communicate without interruptions. In addition, it is easy for me to write as a method of communication instead of speaking since English is not my first language. By writing my responses to the topics in the blog were easier to carry the message without being interrupted or misinterpreted by the receiver.  This blog has been very useful for me because it has helped me to improve my writing and reading skills.  The topics that we were asked to discuss in this blog were relevant for my understanding of the material. We were also given the opportunity to interact with others and to know a little bit about them. It has been so helpful to know that people agree with some of my ideas. All the feedback was constructive by letting me know that I can do better. The channel of this communication is appropriate because technology can make easier and better the communication between people. This blog has been a great way of professional communication. The topics discussed in the blog were important especially the blog call “Cooler Water” this blog has the right words for the right persona and the right moment. In addition, this blog was a great way of managing my grade. I learned to plan, to organize, to control and to lead. I improve my writing and I will be using this blog as a learning tool after this class ends. In a future I will love to hear some feedback about the new postings and specially my grammar. I think that this blog should remain as part of the course because it gives the opportunity to students to express their ideas. Thank you Professor Kurpis.

DISC

DISC is a test about personal behavior and also a good way to learn about us. While I was taking the test I found very difficult to choose only one answer since there were at least two that were related to me but everything worked well. The final result is conscientiousness (Cd) which means “it emphasis on working conscientiously within existing circumstances to endure quality and accuracy.” I totally agree with the result. I am detail oriented and I always make sure that everything I present is neat. I’m majoring in accounting and I think this test goes it right. An accountant has to be detail oriented and analytical because we always have to ask ourselves the question why? Are the books balance if not why? I think I can be a good manager. I like to follow rules and standards. I take my time to make decisions I over think.  In my job I tend to find mistakes in merchandise display that no even my manager notice.  In many cases I think that if I am not around my coworkers can make many mistakes that I have to correct. For this reason my manager depends on me to find mistakes.  In addition, I think that this test is very important to determine the type of manager or leader a person could be because it helps understand others the environment in which we work.

THE POWE OF VISION

Four-years ago I didn’t know that I would be living in the United States and that I would have so many opportunities to grow professionally. My main goals after graduating from Baruch College are to work in a medium CPA firm, to study fashion design and get a degree, to became an entrepreneur creating a small company that will design wedding dresses and to apply my accounting experience in this company and finally but not least to have a family in my own.
First of all, I wanted to be an accountant since I started high school. I am accomplishing this goal, and I would like to work in a medium CPA firm. To accomplish this goal I am applying for an internship and I will probably start in the summer.

Third, I would love to have a family of my own, but I want to have economic stability to be able to handle all the responsibilities that one-day will come.
In conclusion, I know that there are many difficulties that will be trying to accomplish my goal but I am learning how to achieve every goal.

Decision-Making

1.     Which one of these ways did you personally use to handle the potential for chaos during the class decision-making exercise?
The activity of decision-making that occurred in class had all elements such as frustration, self-serving behavior, people withdraws and many challenges. We were given 30 minutes to come up with a decision about grades and test improvement. The behavioral way was accommodation. At the beginning I was concerned about my grade and I thought in asking for an extra credit opportunity. When the professor gave the option of curve. I have to admit I did not know what curve a grade was. I was never give the option of extra 18 points in one exam. I accepted and I think was enough.
2.     Why did you choose this method?
I chose the method of accommodation because I was happy with the curve. In addition, I was concerned that we did not get 100% agreement.
3.     What other methods did you observe in the class (examples?)?
There were many different methods such as compete to win and many took the accommodation method. The method of compete to win was taken by all the people who went in front of the classroom.
4.     What OTHER way to handle conflict could you have chosen to get a more desirable result sooner and with less conflict?
Another way will be to separate the class into four groups. Each group has to choose a leader and a solution for each group and discuss them instead of looking everyone solutions.

Planning Process

In the class activity on egg planning, my group accomplished most of the planning process steps. At the beginning everyone had a different ideas but a member of the group came up with the right idea. The first step is problem definition; every member of the group knew the goal to be accomplished was to build and design an egg-protection device. We absolutely had a leader; he planned the best solution to create the device. The leader of the group planned to get everyone involved in the development. We discussed many possible plans. But we did not come up with a plan B. Another step in the planning process was to agree on solutions in which my group and I accepted the solution of the leader, which was rational and clever. In implementing the actions, everyone took part, some cut the straws, others put the straws together and others cut the tape. The last step was implementation to put the plan into action. The main goal was to get the extra points was not accomplished, because our egg broke. We learned that planning could be achieved following the right steps.

Culture Shock

My country of origin is Ecuador. My first day in the United States was amazing because I was living in a diversified country. But I was surprised that there were no people in the street where I live. In Ecuador there is always people in the street, children playing, dogs running and people talking with their neighbors. While in the U.S I noticed moms waiting for their kids to arrive on the school bus and go indoors for the rest of the day. Parents in the United States are overprotective with their children. When I went to school in Ecuador; I used to walk a lot by myself. My mom wasn’t afraid because my city was safe. I was also allowed to play outside and even in the rain; it was funny. In contrast with children in the United States spend most of their time indoors playing with video games and watching TV. Another difference is that for Latin Americans family is very important. This is show in a TV advertisement of IKEA. In addition, Americans are representing with a couple with no children in the same TV ad but in English. There is something in my culture that many people find unusual but for me it is normal. Ecuadorians eat guinea pigs while Americans have them as a peg.
